When you’re starting your wedding DJ business, you’re probably excited to get all the DJ equipment, all the fun gadgets. (Here’s the Complete Wedding DJ Equipment Guide to help you know what to get.)

But don’t forget all the little things, the tools and accessories that you’ll be so thankful to have. Either you’ll use them every single wedding, or they’ll save you when you need them most.

Let’s dig in to some essential tools and accessories that will benefit any wedding DJ business.

Screwdriver

Gaffer Tape

If cords are going be anywhere someone walks, you need to tape them down using gaffer tape*.

This will clean up the look of your cords, plus make it much less likely someone trips on the cord as they walk. And unlike duct tape, gaffer tape won’t leave a sticky residue on the cords or the floor.

Amateurs don’t have gaffer tape, while professionals do.

Here’s a cord without gaffer tape. Oh no, that looks bad! And it’s a real safety hazard.

Now, here’s what that looks like when the cord is laid out a little more nicely and taped down with gaffer tape. Much better!

Screwdrivers and Adjustable Wrench

It’s a good idea to carry screwdrivers and an adjustable wrench with your DJ equipment.

Your speaker and light stands need to be tight and secure so they don’t fall over.

If screws or nuts become loose, grab a screwdriver (be sure you have both flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers) and tighten them.

And unfortunately, sometimes the twist knobs (what you use to tighten or loosen the arms and legs of the stand) can pop off or break. This is where an adjustable wrench could be used to tighten it.

While you probably won’t need to use these tools all the time, they could save you in a pinch.

Precision Screwdrivers

You’ll also likely benefit from having some precision screwdrivers (aka, very tiny screwdrivers).

In my case, to change the channel on my wireless microphone (which you may need to do if you’re having popping/static noises), I need to open up the microphone case and turn a tiny dial (to 2, 3, 4, etc.). This dial is so small there’s no way I can do it with my bare hands. My microphone does come with a tiny plastic key, but mine is so worn down, it no longer works to turn the dial!

This is where a precision screwdriver could work as a substitute.

You never know when you may need a very tiny screwdriver to tighten or turn something. Better safe than sorry.

Cable Ties

Cords can get messy. Gaffer tape will help with cords on the floor, but it’s not as beneficial if cords are on the table or there are several of them.

This is where cable ties can really clean up your look.

Plus, if you have cords come down from a speaker on a speaker stand or lights on a light stand, you can use cable ties to secure the cord to the stand, further cleaning up your look. This is shown in the photo below.

Cords are a normal part of DJ equipment. But they can be a real eyesore if you let them just hang everywhere. Plus, if they get tangled up, they can become a further mess.

Anti-Fatigue Floor Mat

Wedding DJs typically stand throughout the night. This can obviously be uncomfortable, especially when the floor is cement.

One fix is to get an anti-fatigue floor mat, like what people use with standing desks in offices. I use the AFS-TEX System 2000M Lite Ergonomic Anti-Fatigue Floor Comfort Mat, and it’s helped reduce the pain of standing all night.

Cell Phone Charger

It's not a bad idea to have a cell phone charger you always keep with your wedding DJ equipment. It's obviously no fun if your battery dies when you need your phone.

I regularly use my cell phone during weddings for such things as:

  • To look up lyrics for a song that may have explicit lyrics
  • Accessing the Internet
  • Directions to and from the venue
  • To accept song requests. Guests can text me song requests rather than forming lines at my DJ table.
  • Another piece of equipment to preview upcoming songs or look up a song request
  • A device to purchase mp3s if someone requests a song that I don't have
  • And any of the normal reasons people use phones!

Add a charger cord to your DJ equipment just in case.
